Spicy tomato pickle chutney

I made this chutney when i was craving for something spicy. This chutney is super delicious with Dosa,Idli or even Pongal and Upma.


Onions 3 (Medium size - finely chopped)
Tomatoes 3 (Large size - Finely chopped)
Garlic 5 pods
Ginger garlic paste (1/2 tbsp)
Gingely oil (3tbsp)
Mustard seeds 1/2 tbsp
Urad dhal - 1/2 tbsp
Cumin 1/2 tbsp
Chilli powder 2 tbsp (according to desired spiciness)
Coriander powder 2 1/2 tbsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tbsp
Salt to taste


  1. In a hot wok, add oil, add mustard seeds and let them splutter
  2. add urad dhal and let them fry
  3. add cumin and garlic pods. 
  4. After few seconds , add onions and ginger garlic paste and fry for 5 minutes in medium flame.
  5. Add tomatoes and fry until theonions and tomatoes get mixed up well.
  6. add salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder,coriander powder mix the gravy well and let it boil in simmer flame by covering the wok.
  7. if the mixture is too thick or sticks to the pan, add 1 or 2 tbsps of water and let the gravy boil until thick and onion should be cooked well.
  8. Switch off the flame once the gravy is thick like pickle.
